Following today’s announcements of their cancellation and abrupt removal from the Paramount+ service, staffers who work on both the prequel series “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” and the animated spin-off series “Star Trek: Prodigy” have responded.
Both shows, along with competition series “Queen of the Universe” and “The Game” revival, are set to be pulled from the service as early as next week.
In the case of the “Grease” series, it’s a kick in the teeth as the musical dramedy only just finished airing its second a few weeks ago. Set four years before the original “Grease,” the series scored mixed reviews but managed to garner a loyal following on social media.
The show’s creator Annabel Oakes has addressed the impending removal on Instagram, voicing her disappointment over Paramount Global’s decision:
“In a particularly brutal move, it is also being removed from @paramountplus next and unless it finds a new home, you will no longer be able to watch it anywhere. The cast, my creative partners, and I are all devastated at the complete erasure of our show. Thank you to our beautiful fans… The #1 thing we would love is for you to watch the show before it comes down.”
Meanwhile “Star Trek: Prodigy” creators Dan and Kevin Hageman started a Twitter thread trying to stay positive for the future. As CBS Studios is still set to finish the work on a nearly completed second season, it’s expected this will be shopped around and could potentially find a home somewhere else:
“We have faith this show will be picked up by a new home to help grow our fervent fanbase and inspire the next generation of Star Trek fans. Our talented and passionate team of artists are working tirelessly to complete S2. And we are staying positive and hopeful that our amazing fans will get to see it soon! Janeway would never give up, so why would we? Let’s follow her orders and ‘Go Boldly.'”
“Star Trek: Picard” showrunner Terry Matalas weighed in as well on the cancellation, saying on Twitter: “My heart goes out to our brilliant #StarTrekProdigy brothers & sisters. Here is hoping the Protostar finds a new home soon!”
