Starting as a well-received movie with Billy Bob Thornton back in 2004, “Friday Night Lights” became better known for the acclaimed NBC & later DirectTV series that followed which ran from 2006-2011.
Said series launched the careers of a whole bunch of young actors from Taylor Kitsch to Michael B. Jordan, Jesse Plemons, Zach Gilford, Minka Kelly and Adrianne Palicki among others and is still well-regarded today.
Ten years on, Collider has spoken with executive producer Brian Grazer who offered an update on the future of the franchise which includes the previously announced film reboot.
He tells the outlet the new film will unfold in a different Texan city to the Odessa of the 2004 film and Dillon of the 2006 series. More importantly though, it will be used as the springboard for a new TV series:
“We’re working on another Friday Night Lights movie in Del Rio, Texas on a border town that takes place in 2015 and hope to be making that the beginning of next year… [the film] will lead us into a new series that takes place in a more recent time…like now, today, and we’re excited about it.”
David Gordon Green (“Halloween Kills”) was originally attached back in 2018, but John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (“Devil,” “No Escape”) have now taken over as writers and showrunners on the upcoming series.
