The California Film Commission has announced the latest round of film projects that have been selected to receive tax credits from the state’s incentives program. Nine new films have made the list.
The biggest by far is Netflix’s mega-budget feature “Gray Man,” the sci-fi thriller helmed by Joe and Anthony Russo. Ryan Gosling will portray an ex-CIA operative who becomes a killer for hire and is pursued by a former colleague (Chris Evans).
That project is rumored to have a $200 million budget and is expected to bring in an estimated $102 million in below-the-line wages and other qualified expenditures. It has also received $20 million in tax credit.
Also faring well are an untitled Jordan Peele movie which is receiving $8.4 million, an untitled Phil Lord and Chris Miller-produced bear horror-comedy scoring $7.9 million, and $2.5 million a piece for Dan Gilroy’s AI drama “Faster, Cheaper, Better,” the Octavia Spencer-led sci-fi thriller “Invasion,” Steven C. Miller’s indie “Nightfall,” and an untitled Margot Robbie-led David O. Russell film.
Rounding out the list are the Jessica Chastain-led drama “Losing Clementine” receiving $2.3 million, and the sports drama “Sweetwater” about the first African American player in the NBA which is receiving $1.4 million.
These mark the first feature projects to qualify for tax credits since the program’s third iteration launched at the start of the new fiscal year on July 1st.
