Potsy Ponciroli (“Old Henry”), the writer who became attached earlier this year to a sequel to Richard Donner’s 1980s classic kids adventure tale “The Goonies,” says the project is heading “in the right direction”.
Now 40 years old, the original followed a group of misfit kids who embark on a treasure hunt to save their homes from foreclosure. The journey takes them through underground tunnels, booby traps, and encounters with a crime family in an effort to discover the long-lost treasure of the pirate One-Eyed Willy.
Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan starred. Speaking at the Venice Film Festival to promote his new film, the Alan Ritchson-led action-thriller “Motor City,” Ponciroli was asked about the status of “The Goonies” sequel and said (via Deadline:
“I have turned in a first draft, which was very well received, and I’m on a second draft and I’m about 95% done with that so we’re moving in the right direction.
I know there’s a lot of ‘do we need a new Goonies’, but I’m the biggest fan of the original, it’s my favourite movie of all time. I’d never ‘redo’ The Goonies. To me it was a story that never ended so this is the movie I want to see as one of its biggest fans.”
Ponciroli says there are few bigger fans of the original than himself, so fans can be rest assured it is being treated with considerable care. No director has yet to be revealed.
Steven Spielberg, Chris Columbus, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario will produce while Lauren Shuler Donner will executive produce.
