It seems the desire to return to cinemas in the U.S. is very real.
Warners launched “Godzilla vs. Kong” both in cinemas and on HBO Max on Wednesday and pulled in a record opening day during the pandemic.
The clash of the MonsterVerse titans snagged $9.6 million at the domestic box office from 2,409 theaters – a very solid $3,980 per-screen average, especially considering many are at 50% capacity or less.
Since mid-March last year, no other film has done this type of business (next nearest was “Wonder Woman 1984” with $7.5 million) and it indicates the film could potentially exceed the $20-30 million estimates that have been suggested for the five-day Wednesday-Sunday Easter Holiday weekend run
The film also landed an A Cinemascore, beating the B+ the three previous MonsterVerse films scored.
