A year ago Apple TV+ and Legendary Television announced they were planning to expand the recent four-film Godzilla & Kong Monsterverse with a new original live-action series titled “Godzilla and the Titans”.
The films began with 2014’s “Godzilla” reboot which was followed by 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island,” 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong”.
The four movies have grossed a total of $2 billion worldwide at the box-office and a currently untitled “Godzilla vs. Kong” sequel was already shot late last year in Queensland, Australia.
The TV series is rumored to take place after the events of the 2014 reboot. Chris Black (“Star Trek Enterprise”) serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside comic author Matt Fraction (“Hawkeye”), who co-created the series, and executive producer Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”).
Shakman recently spoke to Collider about his new Amazon Prime series “The Consultant” and says they want to keep details about the new “GodzIlla” series under wraps as much as possible – including when the series lands on the timeline:
“You know, I can’t really say because that’s part of the joy of it is, actually timelines [are] a big part of the storytelling. So I just want to say that’s part of it, but I can’t really say more than that.”
Shakman also says while there will be shared elements between the series and films, the show is fairly self-contained:
“There is some overlap, though we were not heavily involved in talking about it with [Godzilla vs. Kong director] Adam Wingard and his team. Legendary is the studio for our show, as well as for the films, and so they sort of sit at the juncture there between the two, and they have a mythology department there which is wonderful.
So they weigh in on how things might overlap, how certain creatures need to stay on one side or the other, and so there is a lot of conversation about it. But in terms of how closely the narratives overlap, it’s not as involved to say, an MCU kind of Disney+ film crossover. It’s less organized.”
Shakman adds that they’re currently in post-production with a few months remaining to finish the series. Though it could make a late 2023 debut, the show is more likely to arrive sometime in 2024.
Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Ren Watabe, Kiersey Clemons, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski star in the series which is set in a new reality where monsters are real. One family sets out to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret monster-tracking organization known as Monarch.
