Goddard Confirms “The Matrix 5” Is Still Alive

Warner Bros. Pictures

Almost two years ago, in April 2024, Warner Bros. Pictures announced that a fifth film in “The Matrix” franchise was in the works.

The project would’ve marked the first instalment without Lana or Lily Wachowski involved as directors.

Instead, “The Martian” and “Project Hail Mary” screenwriter Drew Goddard would write, direct and produce the feature. Goddard previously directed the films “Bad Times at the El Royale” and “The Cabin in the Woods”.

Since then, however, there’s been zero in the way of updates, and some suspected it may have been quietly let go. With Goddard doing his first interviews for ‘Mary’ this week, he confirmed to Screen Rant that the film is still very much alive:

“[It’s] still in the works. I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.”

If it goes forward, it’s expected that Sarah Esberg will produce, whilst Lana Wachowski will executive produce.

The franchise last hit the screen with 2021’s divisive “The Matrix Resurrections” which cost $190 million to make but grossed just $37 million domestically.
