Emmy-winning veteran director Frederick E.O. Toye has been set to direct the first two episodes of Amazon Prime Video’s big-budget TV series adaptation of the “God of War” video game series.

The series, based on the 2018 semi-reboot as opposed to the original games, follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye.

Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

Pre-production and casting for the series are currently underway, with Amazon also today confirming previous reports that they already renewed the series for a second season earlier this year. Filming gets underway in Vancouver next year.

If you can name a 21st century series, chances are Toye has directed an episode or several of it with his resume spanning over 130 hours of television. It includes an Emmy win for his work on “Shogun” along with series like “The Boys,” “Chuck,” “Designated Survivor,” “Evil,” “Fallout,” “Fringe,” “The Good Fight,” “Lost,” “Lost in Space,” “The Man in the High Castle,” “Mrs. Davis,” “Person of Interest,” “See,” “Snowpiercer,” “The Terminal List,” “The Terror,” “The Walking Dead,” “Watchmen,” “Westworld” and so many more.

The first season was ordered back in 2022 before original showrunner Rafe Judkins exited the show in October 2024. Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Outlander”) has since taken over as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.

Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon also executive produce.
