With the critical and commercial success of HBO’s “The Last of Us” adaptation, the pressure is now on for every subsequent game-to-screen adaptation to be up to par.
That pressure is especially being felt by those behind Amazon Prime’s upcoming “God of War” series currently in development. Aside from Naughty Dog’s “The Last of Us” and “Uncharted,” Santa Monica Studios’ “God of War” is arguably Sony PlayStation’s crown jewel franchise.
Just like with “The Last of Us” series, the Amazon “God of War” show is bringing in the game’s writer/director Cory Barlog to be involved in the series’ creation.
On Twitter recently, Barlog shares his reaction to “The Last of Us” saying it was “truly amazing, humbling and inspiring work that fills me with joy + happiness for all who made it.”
He then says it has put “no small amount of pressure, frustration and a wee bit of jealousy that it is SO F—– GOOD. Seriously, what they are achieving is god damn MONUMENTAL. so proud of them.”
Sony Pictures Television, Amazon Studios and PlayStation Productions are backing the project which will follow the storyline of the two games of the reboot era which began in 2018.
In those titles, a warrior named Kratos exiles himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece and hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard.
When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son Atreus to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish.
Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.
The franchise has won critical praise for its various entries, with the 2018 title taking Game of the Year at the Game Awards. The sequel debuted in November and scored the most wins at the Game Awards last year.
