Amazon Prime Video has given the green light for a TV series based on the award-winning PlayStation game franchise “God of War”.
Rafe Judkins (“The Wheel of Time”) will serve as showrunner, whilst Oscar nominees Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (“Children of Men,” “The Expanse”) are writing and executive producing.
Sony Pictures Television, Amazon Studios and PlayStation Productions are backing the project, which will follow the storyline of the two games of the reboot era which began in 2018.
In those titles, a warrior named Kratos exiles himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece and hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard.
When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish.
Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.
The franchise has won critical praise for its various entries, with the 2018 title taking Game of the Year at the Game Awards. The most recent game in the series, “God of War Ragnarok,” debuted in November and scored the most wins at this year’s Game Awards.
The series joins numerous TV series based on video games in the works, including several at Amazon, such as “Fallout” and “Mass Effect” along with “The Last of Us” at HBO, “Twisted Metal” at Peacock, and “Assassin’s Creed” and “Horizon” at Netflix.
Santa Monica Studio creative director Cory Barlog, PlayStation Productions’ Qizilbash and Carter Swan, along with Yumi Yang and Roy Lee are also executive producing.
