Gladstone, Gurira, Branagh Join “Thomas Crown”

Oscar winner Kenneth Branagh, Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone and “Black Panther”/”Walking Dead” alum Danai Gurira will all join Michael B. Jordan and Taylor Russell in the reimagining of “The Thomas Crown Affair” at Amazon MGM Studios.

Last year, Jordan signed to direct this third take on the material and has been attached to star in and produce the project as far back as 2016. Shooting gets underway in the UK this week.

Norman Jewison helmed the 1968 original which followed a rich playboy (Steve McQueen) who orchestrates a Boston bank robbery. A female insurance investigator (Faye Dunaway) is contracted to investigate the heist and she quickly deduces his guilt and goes after him.

So begins an often romantic game of cat and mouse between the two, with she having to make a decision about what she intends to do.

The project was remade in 1999 by John McTiernan and starred Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. That switched the heist to the art world and both upped the chemistry and cleverness of the heists, becoming one of the few remakes that’s often considered better than its original.

The new take is set in Europe but keeps the art thieving theme. Drew Pearce wrote the script and Charles Roven has also come aboard to produce the film through his Atlas Entertainment banner. The film opens March 5th 2027.
