“Gladiator 2” Set For November 2024

Universal Pictures

Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel has set a November 22nd 2024 release date, whilst filming on the project is reportedly targeting a March start this year.

Paul Mescal (“Aftersun,” “Normal People”) is set to lead the film as Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), and the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s character Commodus.

Mescal beat out the likes of “Elvis” star Austin Butler, “Dune” star Timothee Chalamet, “Top Gun: Maverick” actor Miles Teller and former “Game of Thrones” alum Richard Madden who all auditioned for the role.

The story begins with Lucius now a grown man and when Maximus (Russell Crowe) sacrificed himself to save him and his mother, it left a strong impression on the young Lucius. Crowe has already confirmed he’s not involved in the film in any way.

The first draft of the feature was delivered last November. Scott is returning once again to the director chair and will helm the feature from a script written by David Scarpa.

Also returning from the first film are costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max. Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher produce.

Nielsen and Djimon Hounsou are rumored to be returning for the film after having supporting roles in the original. The original was a massive hit at the box-office, grossing $457 million worldwide at the time.

Scott has been finishing up his Joaquin Phoenix-led “Napoleon” film which is expected to hit cinemas towards year’s end.
