GKIDS has acquired the North American rights to Toho and Korad’s famed 1990 anime series “Nadia: The Secrets of Blue Water” with plans to release an all-new 4K restoration of the 39-episode title on home entertainment platforms later this year.
The “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”-inspired series is a celebrated early work of the only and only Hideaki Anno, the acclaimed creator of the iconic anime franchise “Neon Genesis Evangelion” which GKIDS released last year on Blu-ray (and is available to stream on Netflix).
In addition the original story outline originally created in the 1970s hails from anime filmmaking legend Hayao Miyazaki (“Spirited Away,” “Princess Mononoke”) who ended up retooling the idea for his own works with the series “Future Boy Conan” and the celebrated film “Laputa: Castle in the Sky”.
“Nadia” begins in the year 1889 as people from around the globe are flocking to Paris to see scientific achievements at the Exposition Universelle despite rumors of dangers lurking in the oceans.
While attending the fair, teenaged inventor Jean meets Nadia, a mysterious girl who possesses a highly sought-after crystal called Blue Water. Pursued by nefarious forces, the pair journey by sea and by sky to escape their would-be captors and to discover the secret of the crystal.
