Village Roadshow is set to produce a modern-day remake of the cult 1985 coming-of-age romantic comedy “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt.
Parker starred in the original as an army brat who attends a strict Catholic high school in Chicago. At the same time, she contends with an even stricter father at home.
She decides to follow her passion for dance and, with the encouragement of a new best friend (Hunt), auditions for the local TV dance show. Reviews were not good, but the film has seen regular cable airings over the years.
The film famously was not allowed to use the Cyndi Lauper version of the song that gave the film its name. Instead, it licensed the original 1979 song and title from songwriter Robert Hazard’s publishing company and had to do a cover of that version (Lauper’s changed some lyrics, those changes are copyright to her).
Lee Montgomery, Jonathan Silverman, Ed Lauter and Shannen Doherty co-starred in the original, which hailed from “Back to School” director Allan Metter.
“The L Word: Generation Q” showrunner Marja-Lewis Ryan is co-writing the script for the new version with Allie Romano, whilst Elizabeth Banks is producing, and Alison Small will executive produce.
The film is a part of the film library controlled by Village Roadshow’s parent Vine Alternative Investments.
