Gilroy Says No “Rogue One” Extended Cut

One film that many people would be curious to see the original version of is “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”.

Gareth Edwards directed the project, the first “Star Wars” spin-off film, which released a teaser that included footage of several scenes that didn’t make it into the final feature, including some really striking shots from the film’s cinematographer Greig Fraser.

The production famously underwent five weeks of reshoots with “Andor” creator/showrunner Tony Gilroy taking over to re-write parts of Gary Whitta’s script and oversee the additional filming.

Considering how much was filmed for the project, there’s long been plenty of questions regarding what Edwards’ original cut looked like, what scenes were reworked or excised by Gilroy, and whether any of it could’ve made a good film better.

Gilroy was recently asked by THR if a bigger and better version of “Rogue One” could emerge someday:

“Uh, no. That was the absolute best possible version you could ever have. Oh my God. No. No. I’m not going to go into any more detail. But the more authority that you hear people talk about online about what happened on that movie, the less they know. That’s all that needs to be said. Maybe someday… but no. That’s the absolute best version of that movie that you could possibly imagine in the time that was given.”

According to the trade actor Ben Mendelsohn, who played Director Orson Krennic in the film, previously teased that there were up to twenty or thirty scenes with “enormously different renderings”. Thus the closest we’ll ever see to an alternate cut is arguably that original trailer before Gilroy came on board.

The talk comes as Gilroy is filming the second and final season of “Andor” in the UK ahead of a 2024 premiere. Edwards is returning to the sci-fi genre with Disney’s “The Creator”, which has received strong buzz out of CinemaCon.
