“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” Sequel Begins Filming

Ghostbusters Afterlife Takes Maverick Date
Sony Pictures

Filming has just gotten officially underway on “Firehouse,” the working title for the sequel to 2021’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” franchise revival at Sony Pictures.

Gil Kenan (“Monster House,” the “Poltergeist” remake) helms the new entry – taking over from Jason Reitman who remains onboard as a producer and co-writer with Kenan and Jason Blumenfeld.

Ernie Hudson will be reprising his role of Winston Zeddemore, with Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, and Carrie Coon also expected to return after making their debuts in ‘Afterlife’ and with what’s being dubbed “the next chapter of the Spengler family saga”.

The sequel is expected to return to New York City and the iconic firehouse of the original film. That possibility was teased in an Afterlife post-credits scene with Winston returning to the building whilst we briefly glimpsed a flashing red light on the ghost containment tank in the basement.

The revival film grossed more than $200 million worldwide from a $75 million budget with reviews heaping praise upon various elements of the production whilst also criticising the screenplay and gratuitous fan service. Both Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd returned for that film, but it’s not clear if they will be coming back for the follow-up.

The new film has already been slated for a December 20th release this year.
