Gerard Butler-Led “Kandahar” Set For U.S.

Open Road Films

Open Road Films has acquired U.S. rights to the Gerard Butler-led and Ric Roman Waugh-directed action thriller “Kandahar”. Navid Negahban, Ali Fazal, Travis Fimmel and Bollywood star Elnaaz Norouzi co-star.

Butler plays Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative stuck deep in hostile territory in Afghanistan. After his mission is exposed, he and his Afghan translator must fight their way out to an extraction point in Kandahar, all whilst avoiding elite enemy forces and foreign spies tasked with hunting them down.

Mitchell LaFortune penned the script based on his own experiences as a military intelligence officer during the Snowden leaks. Waugh also did some script work.

G-BASE, Thunder Road, Capstone Studios and MBC Studios are backing the film which was one of the first major U.S. productions to shoot partly in Saudi Arabia. A 2023 domestic theatrical run is planned.
