George C. Wolfe (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) has lined up Netflix’s feature “Rustin,” a biopic about Bayard Rustin, as his next project.
Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions label will produce the film centering Rustin – a charismatic, gay, civil rights activist who altered the course of American history by organizing the 1963 march on Washington.
He promoted the unionization of African Americans and served on many humanitarian missions, such as aiding refugees from Communist Vietnam and Cambodia
Due to criticism over his openly gay sexuality, he usually acted as an influential adviser behind the scenes to civil-rights leaders. In 2013 Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
