“Gears of War” creator Cliff Bleszinski has revealed he is surprisingly not involved in Netflix’s upcoming live-action movie adaptation of the famed Xbox video game.
At last report back in March, “Dune” and “Prometheus” writer Jon Spaihts has been set to write the project, which will reportedly adapt some portion of the games into a live-action film. That will be followed by an adult animated series and potentially further projects.
In an interview with Coming Soon, Bleszinski was asked if he was involved in the production of the movie. He surprisingly revealed that nobody has gotten in touch, and at present he’s not involved.
He also says he approves of the popular fan casting of Dave Bautista in the lead role of Marcus Fenix, a role Bautista himself has expressed a strong desire to do:
“Nobody’s reached out to me, and it’s weird… Marcus is like Bruce Willis in Die Hard – everything he touches seems to turn to crap. I used to say back in the day, I didn’t want like a pro wrestler to play Marcus.
But Bautista has emerged from the pro wrestling circuit and has shown his range in Blade Runner 2049, Knock At the Cabin, Guardians of the Galaxy and whatnot. He literally did that cosplay – he’s wearing the armor that he posted on social media, and he has my full support as… people consider me to be ‘the father of Gears.’
I would love for nothing more than to consider consulting on the movie.”
Set on the planet Sera, the game thrusts players into a battle for survival between humans and a race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet known as the Locust Horde. Players assume identities of soldiers on Delta Squad as they fight to save Sera’s inhabitants.
The various games in the series have sold well over 40 million copies since the franchise’s 2006 debut and is considered a signature Xbox franchise alongside “Halo” and “Forza”.
