Garfield, Isaac Up For Del Toro’s “Frankenstein”?

HBO, Hulu

Following their success with the “Cabinet of Curiosities” series and the highly acclaimed “Pinocchio” animated feature, filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro is reportedly eyeing a new “Frankenstein” Netflix film.

Oscar Isaac is in talks to star as the scientist while Giant Freakin’ Robot claims Andrew Garfield will play the monster. Netflix struck an overall deal with Del Toro back in August 2020 after they’d previously worked together on the DreamWorks-produced “Trollhunters” animated series.

In early December last year, del Toro teased one of his upcoming projects will be a monster movie which he’s been writing and designing and has been doing some development work on for years. He added: “Hopefully, it’ll be next, but anything can happen”.

Mary Shelley’s 1818 story is within the public domain, although Universal Pictures re-copyrighted the character’s visual appearance from its classic films several years ago. A year ago Netflix optioned Bernie Wrightson’s illustrated adaptation of the novel which is likely where the new film will draw its visual representation.

Previously discussing the property way back in 2008, Del Toro indicated he’s not adapting the novel but rather “doing an adventure story that involves the creature”.

This would fit in with a recent synopsis which says the story is set in Easter Europe in the 19th Century and begins when Dr. Pretorious sets out to track down Frankenstein’s monster who was believed to have died in a fire forty years before. His aim is to continue the experiments of the being’s creator Dr. Frankenstein.

If that’s still the plan it’s not clear. Filming aims to begin in June with Gary Ungar producing and Exile Entertainment onboard.
