Warner Bros. Pictures has officially begun development of a film set within the “Game of Thrones” universe.
“Andor” writer and “House of Cards” co-creator Beau Willimon is reportedly penning the script, which is expected to deal with King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros three centuries before the events of the main show.
The project was previously teased in a profile piece on franchise creator George R.R. Martin; at the time, it was indicated that both HBO and Warner Bros. Pictures were working on rival versions of the story – the former doing a limited series, the latter a film.
The film version is being planned as a massive “Dune”-esque feature film. With Warners being sold to Paramount Skydance, the franchise’s fate is unclear at present – even as Paramount boss David Ellison recently indicated “Game of Thrones” is his favourite HBO show.
HBO has multiple ‘Thrones’ spin-offs still in development, including the animated take on the Sea Snake character.
Two shows set within that world are on the air – the recently aired “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” which will have a second season next year, and “House of the Dragon,” which airs its third season this year with a fourth and final one currently planned.
