“Gambit” & “Chernobyl” Duo Plan “Sparrow”

“The Queen’s Gambit” writer/director Scott Frank will team with “Chernobyl” director Johan Renck on a new limited series adaptation of Mary Doria Russell’s sci-fi novel “The Sparrow” for FX.

Published in 1996, the story follows a group of Jesuit priests and scientists, led by linguist Father Emilio Sandoz, that makes the first contact with extraterrestrial life.

The Vatican then backs a secret mission to a faraway planet to prove God’s existence throughout the universe.

However, the mission ends in disaster, and Sandoz, the lone survivor, returns to Earth a broken man to face a Vatican inquiry into the now scandalous misadventure.

Frank will write all episodes of the project, and Renck is attached to direct them all. Both will executive produce alongside “Better Call Saul” producer Mark Johnson and AMC Studios.
