Amazon Prime Video premiered “Good Omens” in 2019, the mini-series adapting Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s 1990 novel for the screen. The upcoming sequel mini-series, however, goes past the book, and it turns out is not the potential end-all for the franchise either.
Michael Sheen and David Tennant are back as the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, respectively, in the sophomore run. Whilst the pair may have helped stop the Apocalypse, they now must return to solve a mystery that takes in all of heaven and hell.
Speaking with SFX ahead of the show’s return later this month, Gaiman revealed that he and the late Pratchett had together made notes on what would feature in a sequel to their novel, detailing various rough plot points.
It turns out this second season isn’t an adaptation of that source material. Rather it’s a bridging season connecting the two stories that Gaiman and Pratchett conceived. Thus a third season would be a direct adaptation of that material:
“Because the hypothetical season three exists, there is a story that is there, and I didn’t feel that we could drive straight from season one into that. I knew what the stakes were. I knew what the parameters were. I also knew that I had David [Tennant] and Michael [Sheen]. I had the angels from plot number one. I had demons from plot number one. And with anybody that I wanted to bring back but didn’t have room for right now, I did not have to bring them back as themselves.”
Thus should a third season be greenlit, both of its original creators will have been involved in the narrative. Gaiman returns as co-showrunner on the series for the second season and would presumably do so again on a third.
Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith, Niamh Walsh and Derek Jacobi are all back for the second season, as are Nina Sosanya and Miranda Richardson as new characters. Meanwhile, Maggie Service, Quelin Sepulveda and Shelley Conn join the gang in the new run, which will hit Prime Video on July 28th.
