Despite fan enthusiasm, a second season of Netflix’s series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” comics isn’t a sure thing even now, according to creator Neil Gaiman.
Talking about the show’s renewal chances on Twitter in the past few days, the celebrated author has offered a realistic outlook in regards to its chances.
He says Netflix is currently waiting on a full month of viewership results before making a decision. A fan responded by saying that with the show being the streamer’s top streamed series for the past two weeks, how is the second season even a question. Gaiman replied:
“Because Sandman is a really expensive show. And for Netflix to release the money to let us make another season, we have to perform incredibly well. So yes, we’ve been the top show in the world for the last two weeks. That still may not be enough.”
Netflix has certainly shown it will quickly axe any expensive show that doesn’t live up to expectations (hello “Jupiter’s Legacy,” “Cowboy Bebop”). Fellow author Joe Hill, whose “Locke and Key” series made it to three seasons on the streamer, advises that “engagement matters, especially immediate, overwhelming engagement. We can have 5 – 7 seasons of this, but only if you show Netflix you want it.”
