“The Equalizer” and “Emancipation” filmmaker Antoine Fuqua has been set to direct the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic film “Michael” for Lionsgate.
“Skyfall,” “The Aviator” and “Gladiator” scribe John Logan pens the film, which promises a “never-before-told and in-depth portrayal of the complicated man who became the King of Pop.”
The press release also says the film “will explore all aspects of Michael’s life, including his most iconic performances that led him to become the greatest entertainer of all time.”
Jackson was the most-awarded musician in history. Over a four-decade career, he was a global figure in popular culture and influenced artists across many music genres with songs like “Thriller,” “Beat It,” “Black or White,” “Bad,” “Billie Jean,” “Rock with You,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Remember the Time,” “Man in the Mirror,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” and many more.
From the late 1980s through to his death in 2009 at age 50, Jackson became a figure of controversy, speculation and investigation due to his changing physical appearance, relationships, behavior, and lifestyle.
Joe Drake, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group says: “Antoine is a perceptive and powerful filmmaker, and we feel very fortunate that he has chosen Michael as his next project. His visionary storytelling skills and commitment to his craft will make Michael an unforgettable film.”
Graham King (“Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Departed”) will produce the film alongside John Branca and John McClain who are co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate. Filming will begin later this year.
