Roadside Attractions has released the full trailer for “Dreamgirls” director and “Chicago” writer Bill Condon’s upcoming film adaptation of the famed 1993 Broadway musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman”.
Jennifer Lopez, “Andor” star Diego Luna, and newcomer Tonatiuh lead the cast of the film, which unfolds in an unnamed Latin American country’s prison in 1981. Luis Molina (Tonatiuh), an effeminate gay window dresser, is serving an eight-year sentence for public indecency.
To escape the horrors of his imprisonment, Molina imagines movies starring a fantasy woman named Aurora (Lopez) – a classic silver screen diva. One of her fictional roles is that of the spider woman, who kills her prey with a kiss.
Molina’s life is soon upended when a hardened political prisoner, Valentin Arregui Paz (Luna), is brought into his cell, and the two form an unlikely bond.
The property started out as a 1976 novel by Argentine writer Manuel Puig, and was famously translated into the award-winning 1985 drama feature which won William Hurt an Oscar and was a breakout role for Raul Julia. Sonia Braga played the Spider Woman.
John Kander and Fred Ebb created the stage musical adaptation which this is based on. The stage version swept the Tonys with seven awards, including Best Musical.
Condon himself penned the script for this “Kiss of the Spider Woman” which opens in cinemas on October 10th.
