Filmmaker Cary Joji Fukunaga (“True Detective,” “Jane Eyre”) will direct the first three episodes of the over $200 million budgeted Apple TV+ WW2 limited epic series “Masters of the Air”.
Effectively the third big war story teaming of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and Tom Hanks & Gary Goetzman’s Playtone following HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” the ten-episode adaptation of the Donald L. Miller book was originally setup there until HBO changed its mind and Apple snapped it up.
The series is described as a deeply personal story of the American and British bomber lads who brought the war to Hitler’s doorstep. “Band of Brothers” writers John Orloff and Graham Yost will adapted the script and shooting is expected to begin in March in London.
The project marks Fukunaga’s first directing assignment since helming the James Bond film “No Time to Die” opening in April next year. Apple is also nearing a first-look deal with Fukunaga and his Parliament of Owls label to develop TV projects for the streamer.
