The makers of 2017’s “Friday the 13th: The Game” have announced that their license for the property is set to expire on December 31st this year.
After that point the game will no longer be for sale either physically or digitally. You will still be able to buy the game until that time, and the game will continue to function for at least another full year after that.
The game was developed by IllFonic as a multiplayer survival horror game that was published by Gun Media. It received numerous bits of new content via several updates, including a single-player mode, until a year later when development of new content was permanently cancelled.
That cancellation was tied to the lawsuit between Victor Miller and Sean Cunningham over the rights to the films. In 2020, dedicated servers for the game were shut down, with peer-to-peer used for online gameplay.
Now, its online component look set to get a machete to the face in January 2025. It’s unclear if players who retain the physical edition of the game will be able to play it in single-player mode indefinitely.
For the remainder of the game’s availability, the price is being lowered to $4.99 for the base game and $0.99 for each DLC piece. The news comes as “Friday the 13th’ looks set to make a comeback via the Peacock series “Crystal Lake” from Bryan Fuller.
