“Friday the 13th” Film Comeback Planned?

New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures

Long-running “Friday the 13th” producer Sean Cunningham has told TMZ that a script treatment for an “old school” Jason Voorhees film is ‘done’.

The “Friday the 13th” franchise has been mostly stuck in limbo for years over a number of legal issues – primarily a dispute between Cunningham and original “Friday the 13th” writer Victor Miller, along with shared rights issues between Paramount and Warners over the franchise.

Cunningham tells the outlet he and Miller have resolved their issues, and with the upcoming merger of Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Discovery he hopes that the project will gain momentum.

He also says the script needs a “young writer” as it deals with “the fear of untimely death,” and he’ll just be a ‘cheerleader’ for the project, though he anticipates being an executive producer should it go forward.

The franchise churned out eight films in the 1980s, and a ninth and tenth in 1993 & 2001 respectively. “Freddy vs. Jason” followed in 2003, and the Platinum Dunes-produced reboot came in 2009, but since then it has been dead on the film front.

The upcoming “Crystal Lake” TV series for Peacock, which serves as a prequel to the films, released its first stills yesterday.
