E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, the directors of the celebrated rock climbing doco “Free Solo,” have been hired to take the helm of a National Geographic documentary about the 2018 Thai cave rescue.
“Touching the Void” and “The Last King of Scotland” filmmaker Kevin Macdonald had originally been attached to direct, but has left the project due to scheduling issues.
The film explores the story of the dramatic rescue of a boys soccer team trapped deep inside the flooded Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand in June and July 2018.
The story made global news and several potential film adaptations of the tale were under consideration – at present this doco and Ron Howard’s narrative feature “Thirteen Lives” appear to be the ones most likely to go forward.
This doco is said to offer exclusive access and never-before-seen footage from the rescue as cave divers set out to rescue the team members.
