“Freaky” Tops Box-Office With Solid Debut

The Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton-led body-swap horror comedy “Freaky” not only snagged some very good reviews (85% & 6.9/10 on Rotten Tomatoes), but has topped the weekend box-office – debuting to $3.7 million.

In these pandemic times, that’s easily enough to top the U.S. charts, while the film also performed well overseas with $1.9 million from twenty international markets. Australia in particular appears to have taken a shine to the movie.

“Happy Death Day” director Christopher Landon helms the film starring Vince Vaughn as a savage serial killer and Kathryn Newton as an under-the-radar high school teen who inadvertently switch bodies on Friday the 13th. The movie is also part of the Universal/AMC early VOD release deal which means the movie can (and likely will) arrive on Premium VOD in December.

The Kevin Costner and Diane Lane-led “Let Him Go” came in second with $1.8 million in that weekend which bumped its domestic tally to $7 million. “The War With Grandpa” with $1.3 million and “Come Play” with $1.1 million were third and fourth respectively. Several films opened in limited release with no real impact and sub-$1000 per screen averages.
