He was a regular on that last season of “Star Trek: Picard,” now Trek icon Jonathan Frakes has spoken about his hopes for where a potential follow-up might go.
In the wake of the success of that most recent season, fans have clamored for what’s already been titled “Star Trek: Legacy” – a series that would follow crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise-G that we saw at the end of ‘Picard’.
That crew consisted of Jeri Ryan’s Captain Seven-of-Nine, Michelle Hurd’s first officer Raffi Musiker, and Ed Speleers’ Jack Crusher who was appointed ‘special counselor to the captain’ in the command positions.
In the new issue of Star Trek Explorer magazine, with an excerpt posted on StarTrek.com, Frakes detailed his concept which would see some other faces returning:
“I suspect if [Star Trek: Legacy] does go forward, it would be Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, and Ed Speelers, who’s now in Starfleet, and Mica Burton and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, who played Geordi’s daughters. I would also imagine Lulu Wilson, who played the Rikers’ daughter in season one and was so fabulous, could be a part of it. She could come back and maybe be in Starfleet… It feels to me like there’s a real opportunity for three of the legacy characters’ children to carry on and sort of be the next Star Trek: The Next Generation. It just feels like it’s laid out there. It’s the blueprint for the next phase.”
Frakes also proposes that his character, Will Riker, could become an admiral overseeing the new voyages which would allow him to appear occasionally while directing episodes and contributing behind the scenes:
“Riker would have to be a captain and have his ship, or he would be promoted to admiral and be a liaison. I’m only half-kidding when I say it would be great for me if the show carries on and I’m like Charlie from Charlie’s Angels. They’d have to come to my office one day a week for a meeting with Riker. That’d be perfect. Then I could direct a bunch of the episodes and be around the show.”
Showrunner Terry Matalas reportedly became close friends with Frakes during the third season’s production. Many of the actors, from the younger ones to the old crew, have expressed a desire to continue or return. Sadly there’s been no update on the possibility of the show going forward with all development on hold due to the strikes.
