GKIDS has announced that it has acquired the North American theatrical, home video, and electronic sell-through rights to anime feature “Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.01 Thrice Upon a Time”.
The film marks the fourth and final installment of the ‘Rebuild of Evangelion’ tetralogy – a reimagining of Hideaki Anno’s iconic 1990s TV series “Neon Genesis Evangelion” complete with a whole new ending.
In the film, Shinji Ikari is still adrift after losing his will to live, but the place he arrives at teaches him what it means to hope. Finally, the Instrumentality Project is set in motion and he will make one last gruelling stand to prevent the Final Impact.
The movie was released in theaters in Japan in 2021 where it quickly became the second highest-grossing film of the year with $85 million at the local box office.
GKIDS will release the film in theaters in late 2022 with discs and VOD sell-through soon to follow to join the existing Amazon SVOD release.
All four films in the ‘Rebuild of Evangelion’ are up on Amazon Prime while the original “Neon Genesis Evangelion” is on Netflix.
