Fonda Has Thoughts On “Barbarella” Remake

Paramount Pictures

A few months back came word that “Euphoria” actress Sydney Sweeney has been set to star in the new take on “Barbarella” at Sony Pictures.

Jane Fonda famously played the iconic 41st-century astronaut from Jean Claude Forest’s French comic book series in 1968’s sexy satirical cult hit feature made by her then-husband director Roger Vadim

In that film, she sets out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand from unleashing his Positronic Ray. No further details about the new version, including a writer or director, have been announced at this time beyond Sweeney executive producing.

That hasn’t stopped Fonda from commenting on the new take in an interview today with THR. She says: “I try not to [think about it], because I worry about what it’s going to be.”

Fonda added that she had an idea of how to remake the title with a feminist twist: “I had an idea of how to do it that [original producer] Dino De Laurentiis, when he was still alive, wouldn’t listen to. But it could have been a truly feminist movie.”

Several attempts to make a sequel took place, but none ever really came to fruition, such as Bob Evans’ proposed sequel “Barbarella Goes Down” or a Rose McGowan-led version in the 2000s.

Sweeney is also attached to produce the remake.
