When it comes to filmmakers, Ruben Fleischer sits in an odd position.
The American director broke through in 2009 with the comedy “Zombieland” and since then many of his films haven’t done great with critics, but commercially he’s had a few hits that pulled in hundreds of millions each, including “Venom” and “Uncharted”.
In 2019, he delivered the sequel “Zombieland 2: Double Tap”, which earned even more than its predecessor despite worse reviews.
Speaking with Deadline while promoting “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” he says they have been discussing a potential third “Zombieland” film to arrive in 2029 – continuing the decade-long gap between entries:
“I’m hoping that we’ll do a Zombieland 3 in 2029. We’re starting to talk about that because [the first] one was 2009, and then we did the second one in 2019, and we kind of left that one all saying, ‘We’ll see you in 10 years.’ That’s coming up now, and so we’re starting to figure that out, so I’m hoping that’ll come together. Then, I’ve got a few things that are raring to go, so we’ll see which one comes first.”
Fleischer also revealed that he was being courted for the fourth “Mission: Impossible” film and at one point and had meetings with Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams.
That didn’t eventuate; instead, Brad Bird got the gig with “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”, revitalising the series and still considered one of its best.
