“Flash” Showrunner On Ending Season Early

The CW’s “The Flash” was forced to end its sixth season approximately three episodes early due to the COVID-19 pandemic, wrapping up with a massive Iris West-Allen cliffhanger this week.

TV Line spoke with showrunner Eric Wallace to address the complicated situation for the show and the network, confirming that the episode “was never supposed to be a season finale” with the situation to have been resolved in the next episode. Now though?

“Suddenly, they have to wait for…I don’t even know for how long. But everything will be fine. Eventually. These last three episodes of this season were already written, and in fact the episode after this, where you get to see exactly where Iris went to, has already been 90% shot. So it’s very strange for me that we were one day away from finishing that episode which suddenly is our Season 7 premiere. Fortunately, you find out where Iris went and, oh boy, will there be tears.”

Wallace has also explained that changes are going to have to be made to scripts as a result of COVID-19 with huge crowd scenes a thing of the past. Even the show’s ensemble are far less likely to come together for a scene anymore:

“In scenes in the finale where we usually have everyone in the room, I don’t know if we’ll have all nine series regulars anymore.”

There’s currently no word on any of The CW’s productions resuming in Vancouver and this morning the network announced it is pushing back the premieres of all its scripted series that normally debut in the Fall until early 2021.
