Studio Canal UK has announced that iconic 1980 cult classic “Flash Gordon” has received a new 4K restoration and will be re-released in the UK this year ahead of an elaborate 5-disc UHD release on August 3rd. A trailer for the restoration is online and can be seen below, along with a new poster for the restoration designed by Matt Ferguson.
Based on the comic strip by Alex Raymond, Mike Hodges helmed the film which starred Sam J. Jones, Melody Anderson, Ornella Muti, Max von Sydow, Topol, Timothy Dalton and Brian Blessed. Though a flop at the time, the ostentatiously designed and Queen scored film has gone on to achieve cult status as campy classic.
The Collector’s Edition box-set release will be comprised of five discs. The first three contain the film in UHD, Blu-ray and DVD format along with an audio commentary track from Mike Hodges and a separate one from Brian Blessed. There’s two other Blu-ray discs full of extras as wel.
Supplemental material includes the featurette “New Lost in Space: Nic Roeg’s Flash Gordon”, multiple interviews, multiple featurettes, an episode of 1979’s “Flash Gordon,” the feature doco “Life After Flash,” the original soundtrack by Queen & Howard Blake, stills & storyboards gallery, original theatrical trailer, booklets, poster, artcards and a sewable patch.
