Flanagan’s “Usher” Draws Early Raves

Netflix

The first reviews are out for Mike Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” mini-series and its unanimously very positive so far.

TV Guide says its “archer and funnier than most Flanagan efforts” and calls it “reminiscent at times of Succession” along with saying it “grows darker and more somber as it progresses”.

Collider calls it his most conventional horror series, yet “hinges on strong, complex emotions that do more than just get your heart pounding”. Consequence says it has “a meaty pitch, elevated by a cast that has never been better.”

The eight-episode horror drama follows ruthless siblings Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) who have built up Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into a powerful empire.

Soon past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying one-by-one at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth and leading Roderick to confront his own past sins.

The series marks the last of Flanagan’s works for Netflix following his other acclaimed mini-series like “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass”. His deal moves to Amazon after this where it’s expected he’ll next adapt Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” books.

“The Fall of the House of Usher” premieres October 12th on the Netflix streaming service.
