Flanagan Talks “Dark Tower” Series Plans

Sony Pictures

In the wake of their shift from Netflix to Amazon, Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy have revealed that their Intrepid Pictures label is working on a new screen adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic fantasy novel series “The Dark Tower”.

Speaking with Deadline, Flanagan says that in order to adapt the full saga, he envisions the project as a TV series that will run for five seasons followed by two stand-alone features.

The pair say they have acquired the rights to the books, which blend dark fantasy, science fantasy, horror and Western. Flanagan has written a pilot script, a detailed first season outline and broader latter season outlines for what has been his dream project which is separate from its deal with Amazon – though it’s hoped they will come on board.

Talking about King’s involvement, he says: “I wouldn’t want to be involved in it at all If we were taking it in a direction that was going to be blasphemous to the Stephen King material, but he’s been very, very supportive and very excited about what we’d like to do with it.”

The only adaptation of the property that has made it to the screen to date was the poorly received 2017 film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey.

Flanagan and Macy previously adapted King’s “Doctor Sleep” and “Gerald’s Game,” two books that people have said were unadaptable, and turned them into two very well-received films, both directed and written/co-written by Flanagan.
