Following the news that Netflix has cancelled “The Midnight Club” after one season, the show’s creator Mike Flanagan has stuck to his word and revealed where the second season would’ve gone had it been produced.
In a Tumblr post on Friday, Flanagan says it would be a shame for viewers to live with the unanswered questions and the cliffhanger ending left by the show’s cancellation.
There were numerous mysteries across the first season, including the identities of the Mirror Man and Cataract Woman. Flanagan says they were Stanley Oscar Freelan and his wife, who built the Brightcliffe hospice.
There’s also a reason Ilonka only sees Stanley in the mirror and sees the Cataract Woman whenever she looks at Kevin:
“This is something else we took from Pike’s original book…these aren’t ghosts, but glimpses of PAST LIVES. Ilonka WAS Stanley Oscar Freelan, and Kevin WAS his wife. They’ve lived many lives this way and are true SOUL MATES – they always find each other, and they always fall in love. In this life, they knew it would be a short one, so they agreed to find each other in the house they built.”
Flanagan says that over the course of the season, the deaths would’ve included Amesh (Sauriyan Sapkota), then Natsuki (Aya Furukawa), then Kevin, then Ilonka. Spence (Chris Sumpter) would leave the hospice upon a positive response to HIV treatments, and Cheri (Adia) would be the only member of the Midnight Club left among a new group of teens telling the story of her now-dead friends.
He also revealed why hospice owner Dr. Stanton was shown to be bald with a tattoo – she’s Athena, the daughter of the original Paragon cult leader Aceso. She wrote the Paragon journal that Ilonka found, turned on her mother and helped the kids escape.
She is also undergoing chemo. Her treatment would be successful, and she’d go into remission, but dealing with it “was going to be a very introspective arc for Stanton”.
Flanagan was also going to adapt Chris Pike’s book “Remember Me” across several episodes with Ilonka slotted in as the protagonist as she tries to come to terms with the fact that she is going to die and to begin to wrap her head around the idea of being a ghost. Those episodes would slot Anya (Ruth Codd) back into the mix.
Flanagan confirms the mysterious Janitor (Robert Longstreet) is Death, and only the patients saw him (not the staff). Meanwhile, the ‘Living Shadow’ that appeared to be haunting Anya is a bit more complicated:
“The Shadow is THEMSELVES. It’s the Unknown. As it engulfs someone, in the last moment of their life, it takes them through a place of understanding and catharsis, preparing them for the next step.”
