The first trailer and poster have been released for the upcoming film adaptation of Playstation’s highly successful “Gran Turismo” video game franchise.
Neill Blomkamp (“District 9,” “Elysium”) directs the project which is an aspirational drama inspired by a true story. Archie Madekwe plays a teenage Gran Turismo player named Jann Mardenborough whose gaming skills were good enough that he won a series of competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.
David Harbour plays his mentor whilst Djimon Hounsou and former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell-Horner are his parents, and Orlando Bloom plays a motorsport marketing executive who is essentially the film’s equivalent of an antagonist.
Also onboard are Daniel Puig, Darren Barnett, Josha Stradowski and Thomas Kretschmann. Shot in Hungary late last year, the project used drones amongst other things to offer some rather extreme angles and high velocity filming.
The racing simulator franchise has its 25th anniversary this year and has sold over 90 million copies across eight games for five different PlayStation consoles. The most recent game, “Gran Turismo 7,” hit stores last year.
Jason Hall (“American Sniper”) and Zach Baylin (“King Richard”) penned the script whilst Stephen Barton (“Star Trek: Picard”) handles the score. The “Gran Turismo” movie is scheduled to reach the finish line at cinemas on August 11th.
