Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for “The Harder They Fall” director Jeymes Samuel’s biblical epic “The Book of Clarence” which will premiere in cinemas January 12th 2024.
Though the film uses Biblical characters like Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene, Samuel tells Vanity Fair it’s “a Bible story about an everyman…. I always wanted to explore the Bible stories, but from the angle of the person that sells Jesus his sandals.”
LaKeith Stanfield stars as Clarence, a down-on-his-luck Jerusalemite embarking on a misguided attempt to capitalize on the rise of celebrity and influence the Messiah for his own personal gain.
The journey to become one of Jesus’ apostles leads him on an exploration of faith and an unexpected path. Tone wise the film has both humor and heart, but isn’t a faith-based movie per se even as Christianity provides a backdrop for the story.
Omar Sy, James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anna Diop, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, RJ Cyler and Teyana Taylor co-star.
James Lassiter, Tendo Nagenda and Shawn Jay-Z Carter serve as producers. “The Book of Clarence” is scheduled to open in cinemas on January 12th.
