Two years ago last month, Sony Pictures announced the “return of the original ‘Karate Kid’ franchise” to the big screen.
Today, that partly comes to fruition with the first poster for the $150 million budgeted film which will be titled “Karate Kid: Legends”.
Shot in Montreal a few months back, award-winning “I’m Not Okay with This” and “The End of the F—ing World” creator Jonathan Entwistle is directing the project.
The story continues the mythology of the original franchise seen in “The Karate Kid” films and likely the more recent “Cobra Kai” series as well. It will involve a teenager from China moving to the East Coast and beginning to study martial arts through which he finds strength and direction.
Rob Lieber (“Peter Rabbit”) wrote the script for the film starring “American Born Chinese” breakout Ben Wang who joins franchise returnees Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan.
Shaunette Renee-Wilson, Joshua Jackson, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight and Wyatt Oleff co-star in the film which will be released in cinemas on May 30th 2025.
