TriStar Pictures has premiered the first two photos from the Viola Davis-led “The Woman King” which will hit cinemas later this year.

The photos, shared on the first day of Black History Month, come from a biopic about the often overlooked Nanisca (Davis), a general of a female military group in the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Based on real-life events, Nanisca and her military recruit Nawi (Thuso Mbedu) as they fight off enemies and those who have tarnished their sense of honor.

Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Sheila Atim, Adrienne Warren, Jayme Lawson, and Hero Fiennes-Tiffin co-star.

Davis, Cathy Schulman, Julius Tennon, and Maria Bello produce with Gina Prince-Bythewood directing from a script by Dana Stevens. The film opens on September 16th.
