First Photo: Timothee Chalamet In “Dune”

The first photo has been released of “Call Me By Your Name” and “Little Women” star Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides in filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming big-budget adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic 1965 sci-fi novel “Dune”.

The photo shows a young royal Paul Atreides preparing to leave the comfortable life he knows on his native oceanic planet of Caladan for the desolate, dangerous mining planet known as Arrakis – a planet that his wealthy family will oversee extraction of the ‘spice’ which is vital to the galaxy.

Villeneuve (“Blade Runner 2049,” “Arrival”) has assembled a stellar cast for the project which also includes Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Stephen Henderson, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

The shot comes from Vanity Fair which announced it will provide a more expansive exploration of the film tomorrow. Chalamet tells the magazine that the appeal of the role lies in that this isn’t your typical hero’s journey story:

“The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts. He thinks he’s going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully a decade later, or something like that.”

“Dune” remains set to open in cinemas on December 18th.
