Sony Pictures Animation and Empire have released a first look photo at classic Spider-Man villain The Vulture in the upcoming animated sequel “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse”.
In the photo the character, aka. Adrian Toomes and being played by Lonely Island alum Jorma Taccone, can be seen fighting with Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099/Miguel O’Hara.
The character is but one of many villains in the new film with the main antagonist being Jason Schwartzman’s The Spot who boasts a body covered in multiversal portals.
Speaking with the British film magazine, Christopher Miller says the new film will serve as “The Empire Strikes Back” of this trilogy – it’s darker, grander, and more emotionally rich and complex:
“People who’ve seen Across… have told us that it feels like The Empire Strikes Back of the Spider-Verse franchise. It shows you worlds you haven’t seen, and it’s an emotional story that ends in a place where you need to see the third one. So, yeah: this is our Empire.”
It’s a bold claim, but as we already know this will unfold across five different universes and offer more personal challenges for Miles as he rediscovers his place in the multiverse. Kemp Powers, Joaquim Dos Santos and Justin K. Thompson direct the new film which opens in cinemas in early June.
