Netflix has unveiled the first photos and a concept teaser for its upcoming live-action adaptation of the beloved and acclaimed animated franchise “Avatar: The Last Airbender”.
The photos show off the four main characters from the series, including Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas Liu as Zuko. The show is based on the popular animated Nickelodeon series of the same name that ran from 2005 to 2008.
The show unfolds in a fantasy world divided into four nations, and each centred around one of the four elements. A century after the Fire Nation launched an attack and pledged war on the world, a new young Airbender named Aang – an Avatar who can master all four elements – is discovered.
The cast also includes Daniel Dae Kim as Lord Ozai, Amber Midthunder as Princess Yue, Paul Sun-Hyung as Uncle Iroh, Lim Kay Siu as Monk Gyatso, Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula, Utkarsh Ambudkar as King Bumi, Momona Tamada as Ty Lee, Thalia Tran as Mai, James Sie as Cabbage Man, Arden Cho as June, Danny Pudi as The Mechanist, Ken Leung as Commander Zhao and George Takei as predatory ancient spirit Koh.
This marks the second attempt to adapt the work into live-action following the critically savaged M. Night Shyamalan adaptation in 2010 which was a major commercial flop.
This series will be showrun by Albert Kim, who will also executive produce alongside Roseanne Liang, Lindsey Liberatore, Michael Goi, and Dan Lin. The show is coming in 2024.
