Nathan Fillion’s “Firefly” tease has been revealed – an animated series.
The “Castle” and “The Rookie” actor revealed at Awesome Con today that an animated incarnation of the early 2000s sci-fi/western series is on the way – and already in advanced development.
The reveal came up during a live taping of his “Once We Were Spacemen” podcast at the Washington DC event alongside his series co-stars Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau.
All of them are expected to reprise their roles, as is Adam Baldwin who played Jayne Cobb. Fillion’s own production company Collision33 is developing the project with 20th Television Animation.
Also onboard as showrunners are Marc Guggenheim (“DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”) and Tara Butters (“Agent Carter”) and a script has reportedly already been completed.
Deadline reports that the series will be set between the events of the original one-season run of the show in 2002 and the 2005 feature film continuation “Serenity”.
Original series creator Joss Whedon is not involved in the animated project but has given the series his blessing. The project is expected to be taken out to buyers shortly.
