The third and final season of “Squid Game” is now live on Netflix, and with it comes talk of what’s next for the franchise – it seems the long-gestating U.S. version is moving forward after all.
Since 2023, reports have circulated that the streaming giant is considering a U.S. remake of the series, with Oscar-winning filmmaker and Netflix darling David Fincher reportedly attached to the project.
As further reports trickled in, it was revealed rather than a remake, the series would serve as a continuation of the franchise. Dennis Kelly (“Utopia”) came onboard to write, while discussions were ongoing about giving the show a new title separate from “Squid Game”.
Ficnher’s commitments to “The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” which is expected to shoot next month in California, seemed to put a [halt]ause on those plans. But now What’s on Netflix reports that the series could begin production in Los Angeles as early as this December with Zeus Zamani and Rhett Giles as producers.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “SQUID GAME” FINALE
The finale offers a very brief tease of what an American version could look like with a scene set in L.A. and a multiple Oscar winner making a ‘special appearance’ and instructing a homeless person to play the game of Ddakji – much like Gong Yoo’s recruiter from the main series.
You’ll have to see it for yourself to learn who, but the outlet indicates said actor’s involvement in this one scene does not necessarily mean they have been officially cast in any future “Squid Game” project.
END SPOILERS
In the “Squid Game in Conversation” special also just released, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk teased more for the series:
“In this story, Squid Game is hosted by a specific group of people, but it serves as a metaphor for the real world, where capitalism fuels relentless competition. So until that ends, the game will not end… I wanted to show that the game was still ongoing elsewhere and that the world had not changed that much. We wanted to say: this isn’t really over. Plus, if it was totally wrapped up, our fans would be sad, and we wouldn’t have a reason to come back.”
Netflix has yet to officially confirm any spin-off publicly.
