Filming Begins On “Shōgun” Season 2

Production is now underway in Vancouver on the second season of the acclaimed historical TV series “Shōgun”.

The core trio of Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis and Anna Sawai are all expected to return and local media outlets (via Coming Soon) have reported that both Sanada and Jarvis are already shooting new scenes for the shoot which is expected to last approximately six months.

Whereas the first season adapted James Clavell’s iconic 1975 novel, the new season will be an original story using characters and elements from the book.

The ten-part first season began filming in September 2021 though didn’t air until February 2024, the project undergoing a lengthy nine-month shoot and post-production period requiring a lot attention to detail to recreate the Japan of that era.

The results spoke for themselves, the series receiving widespread critical acclaim and topping many ‘Best of Year’ lists along with becoming the most awarded single season of television in Emmy history along with four Golden Globes and a Peabody award.

Sets for the new season have been spotted in Port Moody with the old Flavelle Sawmill site, used in the first season for the Osaka Harbour and Castle, appearing to be in use again.

The new run will follow two men from different worlds whose fates are entwined, jumping ahead 10 years as Lord Toranaga strives to become Shōgun, the leader of Japan’s warrior class. Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks return to write the new season.

Joining the cast are Masataka Kubota as Hyūga, Jun Kunimura as Gōda, and Sho Kaneta as Hidenobu, Asami Kizukawa as Aya and Takaaki Enoki as Lord Ito. Returning performers include Shinnosuke Abe, Yuko Miyamoto, Fumi Nikaidô, Eita Okuno, Yuka Kouri, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, and Hiroto Kanai.
